I hope this isn’t going to be a trend. First Invisible Oranges is looking for new management otherwise close down and now Horns of the Devil is doing the same thing. Here is the Facebook status. If interested in picking this huge project up follow the instructions on the Facebook page. For those that don’t know Horns of the Devil is a review site that takes review scores from well respected metal sites and calculates the scores in an averaging type system to give consumers an idea of what’s good and not so good out there in terms of music.By doing so it drives in alot of viewers to themselves and also does the trickle down effect and drives in more viewers to participating metal sites.
The above mentioned websites are a huge part of the online metal community. From personal experience on what little I’ve contributed so far running these types of sites is a pretty big undertaking. We’re not just a bunch of slobs and college students spouting off on the internet about music. We’re also publicists, promoters, and critics. For the promoting part it’s not just promoting bands it’s also promoting ourselves so that we get more views and therefore get bands more exposure. We have to deal with unsigned bands, signed bands, and PR people with labels. We have to deal with trolls that are too lazy to fucking make their own site yet have the energy to bash us in the comments section. For the most part for little to no pay. What money does come in for those that run ads it all goes toward paying the bills to keep the site up and running.
The bigger the site the more of this kind of stuff happens and it can be overwhelming. The free music and in some cases free shows is not enough to offset the amount of attention that needs to be given to the site, readers, bands, and labels. So after that long rant I can understand why Horns is folding but hopefully someone with enough drive and time can pick this back up again. This also explains why we never got on the score list.
